How long does a water heater last?

A traditional tank water heater typically lasts 8–12 years. Tankless water heaters last significantly longer — 15–20 years with proper maintenance.
In Quincy and the surrounding area, hard water accelerates wear on tank heaters by causing sediment buildup on the heating element and tank floor.
If your water heater is over 10 years old and starting to make noise, run out of hot water faster than it used to, or show rust-colored water, it's time to at least get it evaluated. Vinson and Sill can tell you in one visit whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
