What should I never flush if I have a septic system?

Never flush wipes (even "flushable" ones), feminine hygiene products, paper towels, dental floss, medications, cooking grease, or anything other than toilet paper and human waste.

These items don't break down in a septic tank and either clog the system, kill the bacteria that make it work, or end up in the drain field where they cause clogs and system failure.

Garbage disposals are also hard on septic systems — if you use one, plan for more frequent pumping.
