How do I know if my water heater anode rod needs replacing?

The anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod inside your tank that prevents the tank walls from corroding. It should be inspected every 3–5 years and replaced when it's significantly depleted — typically when it's worn down to the core wire or heavily coated with calcium.
A failing anode rod is one of the leading causes of premature tank failure and rotten-egg smell in hot water.
This is one of the maintenance items included in a Vinson and Sill Preferred Partner Program inspection.
