How long does a geothermal system last?

The ground loop — the buried pipe — is rated for 50+ years and rarely needs attention. The heat pump unit inside the home typically lasts 20–25 years, which is significantly longer than a conventional HVAC system (15–18 years average).

The combination of a long-lived loop and a durable heat pump means geothermal is often the last HVAC system a homeowner installs.
