What is a salt-free water softener and how does it work?

A salt-free water conditioner (like the Trio system we install) doesn't actually remove hardness minerals — it changes their form so they can't stick to surfaces.
Instead of ion exchange (which requires salt and produces brine waste), it uses a catalytic process called Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) that converts dissolved calcium into microscopic crystals that pass harmlessly through your pipes.
The result: no scale buildup, no salt to haul, no wastewater, no electricity needed. It's lower maintenance than a traditional softener and better for septic systems.
