Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

Rotten egg smell in hot water almost always comes from sulfur-reducing bacteria reacting with the magnesium anode rod in your water heater. The fix is usually replacing the magnesium anode with an aluminum/zinc rod, which doesn't support the same bacterial reaction.

If the smell is in both hot and cold water, the source is likely the water supply itself — a water treatment system can address that.

Vinson and Sill can diagnose the source in one visit and recommend the right fix.
